A man is in hospital in a critical condition after being stabbed in the neck, police said.
Officers were called to Hampton Street, Cannock, Staffordshire at about 23:20 BST on Tuesday.
The scene of the attack has been examined by forensic experts while detectives have been checking CCTV footage to work out what happened, the force said.
No suspects have been identified as yet, they added.
"We know this incident has caused alarm with many people living locally, and we want to assure you that we're working at pace to find out what happened to the man and to provide you with all the information we can," said Insp Lee Walker.
"We know he was seen outside One Stop on Longford Road shortly before suffering the injury to his neck.
"I can assure local communities that we will continue to share all of the information we can in relation to this investigation, while supporting the man's family as much as possible."
